Lower back pain that seems to go from the left to right side?
Question:

If the right-sided pain is relatively minor, I'm inclined to chalk it up to the likelihood that you are walking funny because of the left-sided pain. Kidney stone pain is described by many to be as painful as childbirth, so if you have that you'll know it. If the pain is coming from one of your kidneys you can usually elicit it by pressing on the kidney (side of your back at bottom of rib cage--easier to have someone else do it--give you a soft punch at the location). Ureteral colic (caused by getting a stone stuck in a ureter) will usually have pain that radiates down to your groin. You might also see blood in the urine and/or have pain with urination if there are tiny crystals in the urine. Unlikely to be a kidney infection if you don't have any other problems (fevers, chills, etc.--a kidney infection should have spread and killed you in less than 6 months).
My first guess would be the same as yours: muscle spasms. It is also possible that you do have a bony problem in your spine that is pinching a nerve. Usually that sort of pain will have an electrical quality to it (shooting pins and needles).
You should see a doctor to rule out more serious problems. If he agrees that it is probably muscle spasms, he'll tell you to rest and possibly prescribe more powerful painkillers and/or muscle relaxants. Massage therapist probably wouldn't hurt either although its unlikely the doctor would suggest that.
Addendum: I'm a med student. I still think it is probably muscle spasms, but I am reminded to a story that one of my attending physicians told me. He saw a 16 year old kid with a complaint of back pain. The kid was pretty athletic and the doctor thought it was just a mild sprain and prescribed ibuprofen and rest. Three months later, the kid's mother called and told him her son had testicular cancer that had spread to his spine--that was what was causing his back pain. The point my attending was making was that no matter how simple a case looks, you have to consider *everything.* I'm not trying to scare you, I still think that your pain is caused by muscle spasms. I just want to make sure you get checked out by a doctor in person to make sure there *isn't* something more serious going on.

Sounds like sciatica, which is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve, right around where you feel pain. Sciatica is the inflammation of the sciatic nerve, located right around where you say it hurts. Could be an herniated disc, kidney stones..you'd better make an appointment with your family practitioner and check with him.
