I think you mean you have the gene for Factor 5 Leiden. This inherited condition is present in about 5% of those who are of white European heritage, and pretty rare in other races. About 1% have the gene from both parents and will have a more serious form of the disease.
When you have the Leiden variation of Factor 5, you lack a substance called APC, which is an activated protein that is the "off" switch for the normal clotting process. Since clotting isn't limited, excess clotting can occur and clots can block vessels causing problems where they occur, as in your DVT (deep vein thrombosis), but small clots can float away causing a risk of heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism.
You really need to discuss the risks and benefits of anticoagulant ("blood thinner") medication since you have already had DVT because the need for this depends on many other issues. If you are obese, diabetic or a smoker, for example, you are at more risk. Even things like air travel or long trips in motor vehicles can increase the risk, as can trauma and surgery, dehydration, and some medications, like hormones and birth control pills. Pregnancy also increases risk.
A person with Factor 5 Leiden is five to seven times as likely to develop DVT than a person with normal factor. In pregnancy, the risk is as much as 35 times as great. Having had one episode of DVT may not make the risk of another higher but remember that just having the factor abnormality is risky in itself.
So, since so much depends on other factors in your health and lifestyle, your doctor needs to discuss with you whether you need medication all the time or only at times of high risk.
I would suggest you wear a medical alert bracelet or medallion in case of accident to warn emergency caregivers you have this. You also should
You're right to be concerned - but this is really one for your GP. And fairly sharpish as well.
