i have read some theories based on research. they are pretty sure it started with monkeys in africa and the virus mutated so it was able to infect humans. since it spreads from human to human through blood exchange and sexual fluids, in Africa it started spreading through sexual contact. Gay male sexual contact tends to be more dangerous as it can cause ruptures in the lining of the rectum through which the semen can infect the blood. One theory showed a relationship between African workers taking the virus back to Haiti, and in the 70's or so, Haiti was a popular vacation place for American gay men, due to tropical climate and very relaxed attitude toward some of the native men toward gay sex for pay. please folks, i didn't make this up. it's not my opinion. i really read a few articles on this in respectable magazines, so don't get mad at me!! so vacationing gay men went to Haiti and got infected and brought it back, and proceeded to have unprotected sex with multiple partners since they didn't know about the danger at the time until it had already spread like crazy.it takes sometimes years for symptoms so a lot of damage was done before the warnings came out to the public.

i heard it was from a male gay flight attendant who went overseas to africa(not sure of the place) and brought it back to the usa where it spread, which is why i think homosexuals get referred to aids a lot, even though the disease can be spread through anyone. I read somewhere that it was initially contracted by humans in Africa, where infected primates were consumed, thereby spreading the disease to man.
