Enlarged left atrium?

Question:
A friend of mine is 36 yrs. old and has been told she has an enlarged left atrium of her heart. She is not overweight. Has anyone had this and is there anything that would be done about it? Is it OK if it is just slightly enlarged?

hi, mostly this is due to Rheumatic heart disease.. Mitral Stenosis or Mitral Regurgitation.. in any case there wil b murmur. i'll urge u to plz consult a cardiologist for this.. as he mus b knowinng how much enlargement can b considered normal.. enlarging left atrium can b a sign of heart failure & if known early & treated promptly then many complications can be prevented plus Atrial Fibrillation & many arrrythemias also associated with atrial enlargement..i jus hope everything turns out normal in ur friend's case..gl
