Why do I have high Cholesterol?

Question:

Answers:
The why is not half so important as what you are going to do about it. You can modify your diet to see if that works. Otherwise, there are a number of drugs, old and new, that are effective in lowering your cholesterol. You want to focus on lowering your bad cholesterol (LDL) while increasing your good cholesterol (HDL), so it's not just a matter of cutting out all fats from your diet. A good nutritionist may be helpful. This is certainly no death sentence but what you do about it will make a difference to the quality and length of your life. Here are a couple good links.

Other Answers:
you could have hereditary tendencies..thank dear old mom and pop.. or it could be all the fats that you're eating. things you didn't think would effect you, really do..
maybe you should be more specific on your question. ie. what kinda diet do you follow. exercise?
Because you love good food.
Your liver is responsible, naturally, for most of the cholesterol in your body. What you eat and how you maintain yourself only determines about 1/3 of the total.

The important thing, then, is to do what you can for yourself while recognizing that there are two types of cholesterol and that one of them is actually healthy. LDL is the bad cholesterol and HDL is the good one that circulates through arteries, helping to clear the bad .

See a doctor, get tested, find-out what your level is and what the proportion of HDL to LDL is and you'll have the picture you need to begin working-from, then begin eating a healthy diet and exercising moderately to lower your blood pressure.

It's high blood pressure and bad cholesterol, combined, that lead to plaque in the arteries and to heart disease. Lower your stress and live a healthier lifestyle. That's really all anyone can do since we're all stuck with whatever genes we inherited from our parents.
Two possible answers: Your diet is too high in fat, especially saturated fats like butter, margarine and meat fat. Try using Canola oil olive oil and/or take fish oil capsules. Soy protein like in soy milk, tofu, etc.
Other possibility: heredity. Since you can't switch parents, you may need a cholesterol lowering medication. Good news: Zocor is now available as a generic and the price will be coming down sharply.
Maybe you are eating a lot of high cholesterol foods. Such as too much red meat, and fatty stuff like pizza, hot dogs, junk, etc. It could also be hereditary. Check with your doctor and get plenty of exercise, at least 20 min. a day of running, or fast paced walking.. Best wishes to you. ~C~
Because you are careless.
you always eat oily foods as well as mutton I mean nonveg.
If you are a smoker the tendency of cholesterol tends to become more.
less exercise and laziness to do any work
please contact a Dr. immidiately to reduce the high level
You are a victim of statistical manipulations. If five people have heart problems,(general population) and six people have heart problems (high cholesterol group) they don't report this as a one percent difference, they say twenty percent more. Then they recommend every one should live on gruel.

We all die sometime.

This is a really complicated question, so bear with me on the lengthy answer. As you know, there are two ways that cholesterol elevates. One is dietary and one is hereditary, however, diet and exercise effect both. When you have dietary cholesterol, it means you are eating too many of the wrong kinds of fat and cholesterol. By nature, what is in your system elevates. If you exercise, you can elevate the good cholesterol as well as reduce the bad cholesterol. Combine that with a more appropriate diet, and you will have no problems.

Hereditary cholesterol comes from you body. Bile is cholesterol concentrated to the form of being acidic so it can break down fats. When you eat fat, your body puts bile into the system so that the fat gets broken down. For those with hereditary high cholesterol, it means that your body is absorbing it's own bile back into it's system. Hence once again, watch what you eat and exercise to help control this. Sometimes, though, because your bile is so high in cholesterol, even the diet and exercises won't help, so you have to take some meds to help with this process.

This is a really over simplified explanation, but I think you get the idea.
Your liver naturally manufactures cholesterol. It is required for healthy cells. It is also used to make bile to aid in digestion. The amount of cholesterol manufactured by the liver is determined by your genes, therefore you can control it directly, but it can be controlled with anti-cholesterol medication.

Meat and meat byproducts are the only sources of dietary cholesterol. This cholesterol is absorbed in the intestines along with any left over bile. A diet high in soluble fiber (from beans, whole grains, fruits and vegetables) and water can trap dietary cholesterol and bile, preventing it from being absorbed in the intestines.

As has been mentioned, there is good (HDL) and bad (LDL) cholesterol. Raising your HDL and lowering your LDL will lessen plaque formation in your arteries. This can be done with diet and exercise. If your doctor thinks that you are not adequately controlling your cholesterol levels with your lifestyle choices, then he may prescribe medication as well.
