Does anyone have info on fibromyalgia?

Question:
I would like to know the symtoms and if there is any way to treat it? My dad has it and we would like to know if there is a way to ease the pain? Most days he can't even move, his muscles ache, and he is in pain all over. Google doesn't help much so please don't suggest it. Any websites would be good also.
Thanks

Read my blog on my 360 page, some people think I'm full of it,while others agree with me. Make your own mind up, it's totally my opinion however, so don't take it as the God's truth, though I do have the credentials for forming the opinion.

Then they should treat him for a connective tissue problem and not give up and dole out a useless diagnosis that serves no one. Don't get me wrong, Doctors are just as responsible for this misdiagnosis as are patients. Some doctors are just too lazy to do the work to get the answers. Sometimes it's an insurance issue and other times it's just a lack of caring, Either way it contriutes to more and more people being medicated for something that just isnt real. Insist that they find the real cause of the pain and treat that. If I have a gaping hole in my head you can add as many bandaids as you want and it's not going to stop bleeding until you fix the hole! If you doctor won't find out what is wrong, get a different doctor, don't settle for a diagnosis of Fibro!

google it. Lots of info. not fun to have it.
Yeah my mom has it and from her personal experiences, the pain is mostly in the muscles. Wikipedia can be off, but if you go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fibromyalgia you'll learn that fibromyalgia can affect many parts of the body, inflicting much pain...
All I know is fibromyalgia is having pain in the body everywhere like you said. I am a medical transcriptionist and the orthopaedist I do work for doesn't think fibromyalgia is an accurate diagnosis because it's not finding the source of the pain and correcting it. Your dad might want to have a second opinion and find a doctor who will keep looking for the main source of his pain. For the days he doesn't want to experience pain, he could always be put on morphine (or a morphine patch). Good luck!
Here's the sucky part - the reason why google wasn't much help is because a majority of the medical community doesn't recognize fibromyalgia as a "real" condition. (Anyone who has ever experienced it begs to differ!)

My personal recommendation - if webmd.com doesn't offer anything different - there's doctors called pain managment specialists or physiatrists (NOT psychiatrists. Totally different.) they help manage and treat pain. A DO vs. an MD would be good too because they focus more on total body healing - they combine traditonal medicine with things like massage, vitamins, etc.

Good luck! I hope feels better.
Arthrotec 75 twice a day would help him tremendously. Neurontin has also been shown to help with doses varying widely from one individual to another.

Also, fibromyalgia is known to cause depression, probably due to the constant pain. And tiredness, OMG he is probably more tired than you would believe. Paxil helps with these synthoms.

In any case, he needs to see a doctor. It never get better without help and the things I have recommended are prescription only.
I know a few people who suffer badly with this. There are no treatments for it . Some Dr.'s don't even recognize it, yet. It would help to get massage therapy and the analgesics like ibuprofen. My cousin uses a lotion like aspricream. There was an article about this in the newspaper that suggested a mild cold tablet, for the aches. But your dad should make sure he can take one first from his Dr. before doing that.
WebMD.com is a pretty good site.
Fibromy... is an escape diagnosis for a lot of docs. Many people feel pain differently and in some instances it might have something to neurologically. There are many studies going on now to prove the extent of fibromyalgia. My advice to you if you are not satisfied with how the doc is treating it is to find out some colleges that are doing actual research on it. Not only will they provide you with more answers, they may be able to help you out cost free. They will also have more equipment accessible to them, probably unlike the doc you're seeing now
I've had it since 2000 so I understand how he feels. go to fibrohugs.com they have lots of info on it and even a chat room where u can talk to others that r going thru the same thing
am praying for u all
I have several friends who have fibromyalgia. They have been taking a natural product called Reliv for a couple of months and are doing a lot better. One of them stopped using their cane after taking the products, another is now symptom free. Reliv has been featured in BusinessWeek, Forbes, Fortune, and others because it is giving so many people their lives back . I would be happy to tell you more, just send me an email.

Take care and God bless,
Michael
