Bicuspid aortic valves-what is their incidence in generl population? How often they leak or develop leakage?

Question:

Answers:
I'd estimate the incidence of a bicuspid aortic valve to be about 1% or so. While they often leak, usually this is a less significant problem than stenosis or narrowing of the valve, which often causes a valve replacement in the patient aged 50-60 years. (Senile aortic stenosis, on the other hand, requires valve replacement at older ages.) Aortic regurgitation occurs in the setting of a bicuspid aortic valve, but again, it is uncommonly the cause for replacement.

Prophylaxis against endocarditis is important in the setting of a bicuspid aortic valve.
