My mother has throat cancer and my father passed away of small cell lung cancer. Should I be screened?

You are only predisposed to certain cancers if you carry certain genes. None of these genes are present in lung cancer. Both cancers that your parents died from are from smoking. Gene testing is available but at this time it only tests for GI tract, breast, ovary, uterine, prostate, pancreas, and a few other rare cancers. If your parent tests positive for the gene you have a 50% chance of having the gene. Only about 5-10% of all cancers have an inherited risk. The main thing obtained from testing is to be extra cautious in early detection plans. Hope this helps calm your fears.
You should see your doctor for regular check ups. Share your concerns with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to give you the best advice.
