Is it medically safe for a 75 yo woman to go thru treadmill stress test, even if it is directed by a doctor?

Question:
My 75 yo mom's doctor keeps putting her on treadmill test every three months or so. I was wondering if anyone knows whether this is safe for her to go thru knowing it is her doctor's order. Should I question the doctor's intentions or incentives?

Thanks

Answers:
Barring significant medical illness such as prior heart attacks, serious coronary artery disease, stroke, such and such, there's no reason why a healthy 75 year old female can't undergo a treadmill test. Even with some blood pressure and heart disease the treadmill test is still fairly safe to undergo. Reasons why you would not want to undergo include, easy fatiguabilty with risk of falling down from dizziness or vertigo, or experiencing shortness of breath or chest pain during very minimal exercise.

An alternative to a treadmill test is a medical stimulation test which simulates physical activity on the heart by injecting a medication such as dobutamine. This is the preferred method of a stress test for those who cannot tolerate physical activity for whatever reason.

Yes, it is adjusted for age.
If the test is monitored by a doctor why not. If your mother is having problems with the tests make sure she informs her doctor. Also, you mother will need to give permission to the doctor in order to speak to you. If asking the doctor questions makes you feel more at ease, then ask.
Nokimoto, There must be a reason they are testing so often. My Mother has to take her Stress Test sitting down because of a bad health. Some people can take the test while using just their arms. There is always a Doctor there or nearby for her safety.
Is there a reason why they do this every three months. There are other tests she should go through. Make sure she has gotten an echocardiogram, holter monitor, and if so a cardiac cath. It's not uncommon for a your mom to go through this test if she has had prior cardiac interventios. Also the physical stress test is usually more accurate then doing a medically induced stress test. And if she has a problem on the treadmill, it is better for her to have it there by a cath lab then it is to have it at home!
What is mom's diagnosis? is DOCTOR trying to establish heart sound, rhythm, strength or is there a Pace Maker involved. When we become unhappy or we question the Providers methods or ability we need to be more involved with our questions, ASK HIM!
yes a constant monitoring is going on of heart and any sign of trouble the test is terminated.
Ask her physician why this is being done.
Yes---I had open heart surgery in 1997. It was four bypass. I had what the doctors call the widow-maker. But God allowed me to live thru this.

Yes, your mom can take the tread mill test..BUT I would suggest to the doctor to take the treadmill test that is induced by a shot. You lay down, they inject this liquid in your vein and all you do is lay there. It does give you a slight headache though. What this medicene does is open up all your veins. They can see very clearly if there are any blockages of anykind. Four minutes and you are done. There is NO reason under the sun why your mom has to walk on a treadmill when this medicene does the same thing. I wish I could tell you the name of this drug. Ask your doctor about it and if he knows nothing about it,,,,,,,,CHANGE doctors.....

I wish your mom well.
