What does having a highserum insulin level mean?
Question:
Answers:
"Hyperinsulinemia" can mean a lot of things. Most commonly, if you are overweight it can sometimes be a sign of "insulin resistance" which can be a part of "metabolic syndrome" or "pre-diabetes".
But there are other conditions that can cause high insulin levels which really need to be interpretted by your doctor. Rarely, hyperinsulinemia is caused by:
A tumor of the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas (insulinoma) or:
Excessive numbers of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas (nesidioblastosis)
both of which also usually cause low blood sugar (or hypoglycemia), not high blood sugar, as is the case with diabetes.
Only your doctor can tell for sure.
