is lung cancer hereditary?

Question:
my grandma fought lung cancer for ten years from smoking. i was just wondering if i am at risk of it too because i smoke.

Answers:
YES, my husband's mother was a chronic smoker, she died from lung cancer, her sister also a chronic smoker died from throat cancer, my husband a smoker also died of lung cancer and he was on 48. My advice to you is to stop smoking.

Other Answers:
Of course you are at risk for lung cancer, but it has nothing to do with your family's genes. The risk is completely self-inflicted in this situation.

Its not the genes that will kill you, its the smoking. You can't change your grandma.you can quit smoking.

WHen you are 52 and get diagnosed with lung cancer, don't blame your graany or genes blame your self!.better yet.QUIT SMOKING! Unlike some cancers, lung cancer in the majority of cases is not considered an inherited disease. However, lung cancer in a close relative does increase the risk somewhat.

For the most part, lung cancer is an acquired disease caused from exposure to toxins in our environment such as cigarette smoke or certain chemicals.

So, you are at a slight increased risk from heredity, but mostly just because you smoke. anyone who smokes anything is at risk for lung cancer

breast cancer, cervical cancer, prostate cancer and ovarian cancer are the only ones that are hereditary
