If you are talking about broad categories, then, perhaps one can classify them by the causes. Such as injury from lack of oxygen (anoxia), from physical causes (trauma, radiation, heat, etc.), from infections, from tumor or cancer, metabolic abnormality, vascular or blood vessels abnormality (stroke, high blood pressure, etc.).
