About asthma?

Question:
Never had asthma before. This morning around 2:30 am, I woke up, unable to breathe. My chest was extremely tight, and it hurt to breathe in deeply enough to try getting oxygen into my lungs. I would exhale and not want to inhale. Also, I kept couging up mucus or something from my lungs. The whole thing lasted for about an hour, maybe longer because I was dreaming about it, and awoke unable to breathe. What could cause this if I don't have asthma?? I do have a new cat, but she's been sleeping in my room for the last two weeks and this hasn't happened before.

Answers:
I didn't know I had asthma when I was diagnosed two months ago. I got the flu in early August and found that I couldn't breathe at all. I had horrible wheezing and my chest was really tight. I could not get a deep breath for the life of me.

Long story short, I ended up in the hospital for four days on breathing treatments, and was on oxygen for two full days. I had starved myself of oxygen by not getting to the hospital sooner.

I also have a cat but I keep my house very clean... dusted, vacuumed and I wash bed sheets & blankets often to keep the cat hair at bay.

You need to get to a doctor and find out if you have just allergies or if you have asthma. You will need an inhaler if you have asthma. Don't wait! It's serious stuff...
Asthma can come from neglected allergies. I would go to a doctor. It could be worse next time.
