Is it possible to have both bacterial and fungal folliculitis?

Question:
I have been treating myself with fucidic acid (anti-bacterial) for the past 2 months and the medication works for mostly if not all pustules. It works well on boils almost immediately, but there are a few stubborn ones where it doesn't seem to work. Is there anyone there who can explain this?

Answers:
Most antibacterial antibiotics do not work against fungi. Their physiological chemistry is much closer to ours than bacteria. Fusidic acid is solely antibacterial. Co-infection by two different micro-organisms is not unheard of. Have those pustules scraped & cultured, by a dermatologist in order to try to identify the causative organism. Alternatively, if you are in a hurry, get some o.t.c. tinactin, at your local druggist (chemist), and apply it daily, for 3-4 weeks. If that does not work and the causative oeganism is found to be a dermatophyte fungus, one of the triazole antifungals should work. (like itraconazole, ketoconazole, or miconazole etc.). you will need a prescription for those latter drugs.
Bonne chance,
Dan.

Other Answers:
My recommendation is that you stick with your treatment. There will be stubborn pustules that continue to resurface from time to time. In addition, you may want to take a supplement that improves the health of your skin. Specifically, you need something with Omega 3 and 6 oils. These are oils that are essential to our body, but they are not found in most common diets. I would recommend getting some flax seed oil....oh check out this website too: http://www.drweil.com/u/QA/QA326165/
