My dad is being tested for polycemia vera. Can anyone tell me what this is?

I tried to look it up, wow..there really isn't much information online about it. All I can get out of what I DID find is that it's possibly some form of cancer or something that can turn into lukemia(sp?)

It is Polycythemia Vera. Increases Red Blodd Cell Count in the Complete blood count which is a routine test prompts the diagnosis as a first step. One needs to investigate for underlying causes.
its an increase in red blood cells due to the hyperplasia of cell forming tissue in the bone marrow (makes red blood cells) and an increase in the number of leukocytes and platelets, treatment is aimed an decreasing the number of RBC's may require meds such as myelosuppressive therapy, interferon and large dose of aspirin
