why are ketones bad?

Question:

Answers:
Ketones are NOT bad in and of themselves! They are a by-product of fat metabolism. Anyone who is losing weight is going to be burning their own fat, or they wouldn't lose weight! Ketosis is the process of metabolizing fat. It's the absence of insulin that really causes the problem. When there's no insulin many cells are unable to get glucose from the blood. The body thinking it's starving of food will begin releasing glucose stores into the already glucose saturated blood, and without insulin glucose levels continue to rise. Then the body begins breaking down fat stores and muscle tissue. This can happen in people who are making insulin in EXTREME starvation. The ketones released from metabolizing fat build up, along with glucose, in the blood. Normally the kidneys filter out ketones as waste. Ketones are acidic. With glucose levels so high the kidneys are trying to rid the body of glucose too so it uses fluid that would usually be kept in the body, which causes dehydration, and leaves the blood thick and acidic. This is ketoacidosis, and this is when ketones are dangerous. If insulin deficiency is not an issue, or one is not starving, ketones are not bad, just a natural part of the bodies metabolism.
yes they are...i had such horrible morning sickness that i could not eat at all for a month..my body developed Ketones, i was almost physically unable to walk because my body hurt so badly...

if its something going on with you, you need to consult your doctor because its not a good thing
Ketones in and of themselves are bad, but they point to something else. When the body is starved for glucose it breaks down protein to release energy yielding ketones. Its not the ketones but that they indicate the body is starving. Your brain and heart can't run off ketones unless theres still enough glucose around to support them you could be headed for coma or heart failure.

By the way atkins induces a mild form of ketosis, not really a threat for what I'm discussing above.
ketones are bad because it means that your blood sugar is high and you have to go to the e.r. to get hospitalize because your ketones are high
