Aba therapy-----son rise therapy ?
Question:
Answers:
ABA and Son Rise are to totally different approaches... ABA stands for Applied Behavior Analysis. And, it doesn't involve those sessions. Most times, those sessions do not even incorporate principals of ABA, so I think it is not the correct term. Applied Behavior Analysis is a science in which you evaluate/study behavior, find the function (or the "why") of the behavior, and apply treatment accordingly. Applied Behavior Analysis suggests a scientific approach to first analyzing the problem behavior or the behavior you want to change, then systematically testing reinforcement hypothesis in order to increase pro-social behavior or decrease unwanted behavior. In the literature, most behavior is maintained by either escape from task, access to tangible items, access to social attention, or automatic (sensory). Or a combination of... For example, if you were able to determine that your son was tantrumming to escape a task or unwanted situation, you would design your treatment around this. You could either not allow him to escape when he exhibits this situation and introduce a break for appropriate requests (e.g., break card or PEC). You could also evaluate reinforcers and present for task completion.
On the other hand, if your son was exhibiting that same tantrumming behavior, but you were able to determine that he did it every time you didn't give him undevided attention, your treatment would be significantly different. Instead of teaching him to request break, you obviously would want him to teach to request attention. Or, you could set up times where he knew when he was going to get your attention and wehn you had to work on something else.
But, you can get more information on abainternational.org. Overall, I would suggest reading and maybe even taking a course or two in ABA... Check Penn State's website for online ABA courses...
Son-Rise is a therapy that has not been proven in the literature like ABA has, but the focus is more on fostering emotions and play... That, you could probably look up on a website. The only problem is that it is not reputable yet... there are no certifications in the field whereas ABA has colleges and universities with highly respected programs in this field and there is a certification (BCBA). Board Certifiied Behavior Analyst)...
Just ask around, but that website is good. And, Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis is a great place to read on research and treatments.
The bottom line with those therapies is to get down on the floor and play with your kid. I would say yes but I know most people would say no. One on one floor time is all they are saying just saying in different ways.
