Answers:
Several possibilities:
* your body has lost the habit of regularity,
* your water intake is too low,
* your fiber intake is too low,
* stress factors,
* etc.

The water and fiber factors are easy to deal with, INCREASE them. More Water, Fruits, Veges.

The regularity factor is something you may need to work on.
What is normal is to poop 2-3 times a day, and it should be soft and easy. I had a problem much like yourself some years ago and landed in the hospital. I worked on re-establishing regularity after that and never had a problem since.

Try these to improve regularity:
* drink a cup of prune juice before bedtime, and after waking up. You might try warming it up.
* drink a cup of strong coffee (not decaffeinated stuff) soon after waking up.
* eat a good, hot, healthy breakfast (the warm food helps get your bowels moving),
* take your place on the throne at a regular time, even if you don't feel like going (like say within the first hour of waking up).

If your bowels need more "encouragement" these are more aggressive:
* sticking a piece of soap up into your rectum (the size of your little finger, from the nail to the first joint)
* drink a "tea" of brown sugar (a table spoon in a cup is about right).
* you might even try to give yourself an enema of warm vegetable oil. Had to do that to my daughter a few times, but it did work.

(all of these things have a laxative effect, I don't think you really need medication, yet.)
You are probably dehydrated! Drink lots of water and eat lots of fiber (ex. in veggies and whole wheat bread) to help keep you regular.
Are you taking any new medications that would cause constipation? Try eating xtra fiber and see if that does the trick. If your bowels are not moving like normal soon, I would consult with your Dr. to make sure there isn't some kind of obstruction in your intestines. Be careful straining, that will cause hemorrhoids.
take laxatives. if that doesnt work then... enema. =S
