They remove the tonsils by going through your mouth, so you won't have any visual scar. There is one method of removing tonsils where the patient is awake and just has a local anesthetic, but this is very expensive and is rarely done, so you'll most likely be put to sleep. You won't be able to swallow during surgery, but the doctors won't let you choke, either; if there's liquid forming at the back of your throat, there are ways of getting rid of it (think like the straw thing that sucks up spit at the dentist's office).
