you would want to test at 4 weeks first, if you know for a fact that you were exposed to HIV, then test again after 14 weeks, 14 week test is enough to give you an efficient result, hope this helps.

It depends on what kind of a test that you get. An old co-worker of mine used to work for the blood bank and he said they do what is called an "acid test". Basically they can determine almost immediately even though it is not a full blown virus in your body. There is some element that is present that wouldnt show up on just a normal blood test. I would suggest donating blood b/c if it is infected they will be able to tell and they have to notify you. If it is negative then you just helped someone in need. I do know that if you have a normal blood test done at the doctors office, those tests will produce a positive result within 2 weeks to 6 months of infection.
More than 99 per cent of HIV infections will show up on an HIV antibody blood test done 13 weeks (3 months) after infection with modern tests. Virtually all will show up by 6 months.
