There is a medication called Chantix and you get it from a doctor. It helps control cravings and all that fun stuff. My friends husband is a truck driver and he smoked a lot this worked great for him. I am going to do it too I am just not ready yet. Good luck.
My parents are going through this right now too... they are planning to quit next week.
I've gotten a few answers from people regarding this situation:
1.) Change your lifestyle - you don't want to have the same routine you've had while smoking otherwise you'll want a cigarette like you normally do.
2.) Keep yourself busy - exercising, cleaning, cooking, walking, anything to keep your mind off of smoking
3.) Try the patches, the pills, or the gum - they only have a 20% success rate but they help with the cravings and withdrawal
4.) Suck on hard candies or chew gum - this helps cravings pass
5.) Talk to your doctor about a prescription for a pill called Chantrix - it helps block your brain receptors, you'll continue to smoke while taking it, but the longer you do it the less appealing the taste of a cigarette will become
6.) Do a yahoo search for "How to quit smoking" - I did and got a lot of hits.
If you need anymore help email me. With my parents going through it I'm trying to get as much information as possible to try to keep them from getting so cranky and snapping on everybody (including each other) over nothing.
Hope this helps. :-)
Cold turkey worked for me and staying away from smokers. 2 years so far.
1) Get away from others who smoke and that temptation will lessen.
2) Get away from places you smoke (i.e bars and etc) and if you have to be in those places replace your time there with something else. (not food)
3) Find something else to fill with the place that smoking took. Maybe write yourself a note about why you want to quit smoking and then when you want a cigarette read the note until the desire passes or if you want God's help say aloud scripture verse like "I can do all things through Christ who strenghtens me."
I used to smoke about 200 cigarettes a day. Stopped more than forty years back. Never smoked again.
Fear was the key.
The chapter on habits in William James' book,'Text book of psychology' was a major help.
One has to stop and not make an exception subsequently at any cost. It worked for me.
Smoking can be surely/definitely got rid of in just 3 to six months of doing quality meditation for 30-50 minutes daily under the guidance of an experienced and result oriented spiritual teacher.
