If he is a private person, you would probably embarass him. Would it not be better to speak to him alone and just to let him know you are thinking about them and if he ever needs you to do something, he only needs to ask. You are very thoughtful and I'm sure he would appreciate just knowing you are there.
I would just send him a private note or nice card telling him that you are here for him if he ever needs someone to turn to because he is faceing a very difficult time ahead.
nothing...respect his privacy or speak with him in private to discuss your intentions away from the office.
You can donate to the American Cancer Society in her name and they will notify her.
Or if you think medical bills may become a problem for them, you can contact her doctor's business office and pay a portion of her bills. If you tell them not to divulge your name they won't.

Keep it very private. In fact the HIPPA ( health information privacy act.) says legally you may not discuss peoples health issues. If he told you this information then you can say' Let me know if there is anything I can do for you' But if he didnt tell you personally, then dont bring it up since he doesnt want it discussed and you should respect his privacy. Later on there will be things you can do like bring food or flowers or donate afterwards.
