What not so major could be found in a routine blood test?
Question:
My husband (46) went for a routine physical and blood test. He took the blood test on Thursday and on Monday afternoon they called our house for him. As he wasn't home, he returned the call first thing this a.m.. The doctor wants to see him on Thursday.
My question is - does this HAVE to be terrible? I'm worried sick. I thought if it was cholesterol or the like they would say something on the phone. Now I'm having all sorts of terrible ideas. Ugh!
Perhaps a health professional or someone out there may be able to at least, temporarily put my mind at ease.
Answers:
I wouldn't worry a whole lot. It could be anything. His cholesterol could be up, his PSA levels could be up and the doctor might want to follow up on it.
I think if it was something REALLY major, they would have told him to bring in his wife as well.
It's very common for doctors to review blood work, put aside the charts of patients he wants to follow up on, and have the staff call them in for a follow-up appointment. Don't get all wrung up over this...it's most likely something minor.
no big deal, it could be anything from high cholesteral, high or low potassium alot of minor things that can be dealt with in his diet and taken care of before they become a chronic problem as he ages...knowledge is wisdom
Do you know what "routine" test were done? Usually, if its something major, like STDs, your husband would have sign a document. I'm pretty sure its something like cholesterol and blood sugar.
White cell count (which if elevated can indicate infection or disease)
Red blood cells
Iron level
Liver funtion
Kidney funtion
Cholesterol
Platelets
usually they dont tell u whats wrong over the phone ,,they like to have u come in and pay the big office fees,,dont stress so much,, it isint going to change the outcome,, hopefully it will be something simple that they can give him a little pill and drain your pocket some more,,,
Put your mind at ease. Something is wrong, but it needn't be terrible. Docters like to discuss the situation face to face, even if he's only going to suggest a diet change.
Now, I'll tell you what happened to me that was terrible. The docter called me and told me my sugar was so high I was to get myself to the emergy room IMMEDIATELY. Talk about panic. BTW, the emergency room personel laughted and suggested I make an appointment with a more experienced doctor as early as possible, but no panic.
doctors dont give out test results over the phone
therefore people being people will generally jump to the conclusion its because of the dire results that they are going to recieve probably is best done face to face, and not over the phone! and they will live in limboland for a week, until they finally slump into the doctors chair "go on doc give it to me i can take it ",just to be told "good news your results are great excellent in fact" "eh! are you sure doc,im not on me last knockings ,well i knew that all along reallyha ha ha.thankyou doc bye",then they pass out on the floor in reception with the releif
