My throat hurts, how do I make it better?

Question:
Hey guys I just moved to San Diego from Los Angeles for college and this is the first time being permanently away from my parents. I don't want them to worry so I am asking on yahoo!

The last 2-3 days I have been feeling progressively worse.
The back of my throat feels like it doubled in size.
Swallowing anything is painful.
Today I just woke up, and my brain feels like a oversized balloon in my skull.
I have a slight runny nose.
I feel very bad =[

I usually have a good immune system but maybe its the change in environment that got me sick? I have no experience with any health problems so please help me out! I hope I can go to wal-mart and buy some medicine to make me feel better.

Thanks in advanced!

Answers:
For the sore throat try:

1.) Throat Lozenges - especially ones with honey
2.) Drink as much tea as you can stand - adding honey helps
3.) Eat soups or popsicles to soothe the pain

For the general ill feeling:

1.) Try something like sudafed severe cold - this usually takes care of runny noses, head congestion, sore throats: talk to a pharmacist at wal-mart they'll help you
2.) Rest A LOT
3.) Drink lots of fluids

You should start feeling better in a few days if you do all of that. If you get worse or don't begin feeling better see the campus doctor as you may have an infection that requires antibiotics.

Hope this helps! Feel Better Soon! :-)
salt, mixed with hot water.
try an allergy or sinus pill,,if it doesnt work, go to doc
Try drinking a warm cup of tea or warm water! that helps me alot
Sounds like it could be strep. In that case, you need to go to the doctor.

Even if not, get sore-throat medicine. Or, drink tea with honey.
usually when my throat hurts, i make some lipton tea, with a lot of honey and sugar, and it feels better...
see a dr and get a checkup better safe then sorry
for a quick fix gargle some warm salt water.
if it could be allergies, take some allergy pills like a benadryl
if that doesn't help go to a dr. you could be really sick :o)
maybe its the flu... try tera-flu
do not drink pills like advil, aleve, tynedol cuz they r useless in situations like these. for troat try eating some kisses (hersey's choclate) they r said it is useful.
Warm water with lots of salt - gargle it - temporary fix
Gargle with a half a cup of warm tap water and one table spoon of regular table salt. Do this before you sleep, and when you wake up.
Gargle with Listerine.
Looks like you need a good throat flush with Bleach and gargle then spit it out. It will taste nasty, but kill germs like the dickens.
exactly as another person posted, hot water mixed with salt, and just hot water will help too. Try buying some cough drops. I've had something like that before, and mainly hot water will help.
=( You might want to see a doctor. However, there is one thing that kind of helped me with a sore throat. Try gargling warm water with salt mixed in. Drink lots of water period. It could be allergies that you are experiencing and there are lots of over the counter things like Claritin (takes a few days to work) and Benadryl (makes you sleepy though). You really should see a doctor though to find out what's really wrong with you.
Take Ibuprofen or Tylenol for the pain, but get something that relieves your other symptoms, running nose, stuffiness. I would buy DayQuil.
You need to go to the doc. I know it's an expensive hassle, but it's worse than you think. You probably have strep throat, based on your symptoms. If so, nothing will make that better except antibiotics. They will do a throat culture to verify.

Until you can get there, try warm salt water gargle (as everyone else said), and also try vinegar. Just swallow a teaspoon of it straight. The high acid content will temporarily slow any bacteria growth.
well first you should buy Vic put it on your chest and rub till it gets really worm then breath it in throe your nose and mouth it helps allot. I just Had my throat it got better in 3 days. oh and put a little before you do anything and if you go to bed put it under your nose so you can breath it in all night.
You can start off by gargling with salt mixed in warm water. Another thing my daughter swears by is Tylenol sore throat which you can get at any drug store. These are things you can do when you first get a sore throat. It worries me, however, that you have had it for two days and it is getting worse. You can look in the mirror and check for white spots in the back of your throat. If you see these, you might have strep throat. If you go to a clinic (some are free) or an emergency room they can check for this too and prescribe antibiotics to get rid of it. Hope this helps!
first of all you are a grown man and you are trying to be responsible out in San Diego but one thing is for sure moms know best. nothing like moms advice-she won't worry about you the best thing is your trying to make yourself better. anyways try gargling with Listerine which will kill of the throat infection. go the the pharmacy at wal-greens and ask the pharmacist he will recommend what you really need. if all fails within 2-3 days call your doctor you probably have an infection and need antibiotics. hope you feel better and eat chicken soup with crackers. good luck
Yup, dissolve about 2 teaspoons of salt in a small glass of warm water and gargle with it--try not to swallow because it will make you want to err spit up. ClaritinD is good if you think you may have a sinus infection. Drink plenty of water and try to est as much as you can.
