I'm not a doctor and this is not a professional opinion...but anxiety about this sort of thing is common and the absolute best way to fix the anxiety is to take action and get tested. Check out the website below and Get Tested. If it happens to turn out positive, you'll deal with it and your doctor will be able to give you meds to keep your child from getting infected. If it's negative, you'll feel SOOO relieved and you'll be able to focus on your new baby!! Either way, you'll resolve some of this stress. So get the test!!
um.. get tested
alsooooo the HIV/AIDS virus dies when it comes into contact with oxygen so theres an extremely low chance of you having contracted it
but get tested anyways, just to be sure
HIV doesn't show symptoms. Yes, you sound a little paranoid but since your pregnant maybe you should think about being tested for all types or STD's. It won't do you any good to be stressed over this. Good luck with you baby!
If you are worried then get checked out. I don't know how you could have caught HIV through a navel piercing though. Did the piercer cut themselves and bleed into your fresh piercing?
"Remember that it takes up to three months, and in rare cases up to six months, after exposure to the virus for sufficient antibodies to show after a test."
Don't worry your probably paranoid but you shouldn't be, if you haven't had any signs or symptoms, and you haven't been sick a lot then you are fine. Also when you are pregnant I'm pretty sure they do blood tests and would tell you if something was wrong.
Your doctor will do a test anytime you are pregnant. If you are that paranoid about it, mention it to them. Yes, you can get it from peircings, if the needle was used on someone else that was infected with it, but chances are you are fine.
If you are worried then you should definetly get tested. If the place that did it was clean and sterilized the needles then your chances are low you got it but it never hurts to get a test just in case.
It is possible that you could have HIV or any number of STDS and not show symptoms for many years. I would go get tested so you can put your mind at ease and know your baby is safe too.
I think you are being paranoid. That being said, you didn't day where you got your piercing done. If it was a legitimate piercing parlor, then you have no need to worry; the parlors were taking precautions against HIV at least that long ago. If you got it done by some skeevy guy in his basement, it would have been hard to transmit HIV that way, but not completely impossible.
As for the lack of symptoms, it is possible to be HIV+ and not show symptoms for over 10 years. Like I said, all things considered you are probably freaking out over nothing, but it's so easy to go get tested at the public health department or at a community health clinic and it would be anonymous. Heck, there's even a kit you can buy at Walgreen's (or online) and get tested through the mail.
Well it all depends..when u got pierced was it at a piercing place or did you do it yourself with a group of friends using the same needle? There have been alot of changes in piercing places over the last 10yrs. They use to reuse their needles after sanitation but now they require them to dispose of used needles and use a fresh one every time. So there may of been a chance of infection though it is EXTREMELY low...It also takes awhile for HIV to show up..and 10 years is plently of time. I'm not sure if you would of gotten sick already if you had been infected but really the best way is just to be tested. I know its way scary but do it for your child. Because there are meds they could give you to protect your child if it does come out that you are. But honestly I just think you are being paranoid...I dont think there is really anything you have to worry about..but get tested so you have piece of mind. They also have home HIV test...they are a bit expensive but if you would feel more comfortable with that I suggest you do one of those.
to begin with, the chances of a baby contracting it from his/her mother is extremely low. Second of all yes it is possible to show no symptoms for 5 years but you would show signs at this point like some type of soars, extremely weak immune system, etc etc however, do get yourself tested if you're in doubt...there's places in every city where you can get it done for free like the red cross...quit worrying so much...10 years ago was 1997 and most places were nearly as pristine and clean as they are today. dont sweat it but if you are freaking out...go give blood
There is a very low likelihood that a belly button piercing would transmit HIV. The needle, or stud, would had to been used on an HIV-infected person, drawing blood, within seconds of it being used on you.
If you have any other risk factors, or if you think your husband might, you should get tested.
If you are receiving prenatal care in an urban area of the U.S., you will automatically be offered screening for HIV, herpes, and assorted other diseases that could affect your developing child.
If this is not offered to you, don't hesitate to ask. Medicaid covers it, so most private plans do as well.
Best wishes to your expanding family.
Trust me when I say this will not be the last time you freak out about something during this pregnancy (and for oh, about 18 years afterward).
All pregnant women get tested for HIV and diabietes while pregnant. Although I think you can refuse the test not positive on that one but your doctor should have sent you already to get bloodwork done and the syrup test.
Yes, there is a very small chance you can live with HIV 10 years without symptoms of AIDS. It isn't likely, but you state you are very concerned (freaking out) and it is quite possible you won't stop worrying until you're screened.
Was your navel pierced by a reputable, licensed piercer? If so, you are not very likely to have acquired a bloodborne pathogen via your piercing. Always be sure your piercer or tattoo artist is licensed, reputable and knowledgeable.
As you are now pregnant, you can request HIV screening without seeming paranoid. Simply tell your obstetrician, "I'd like to be screened for HIV." Then you can stop worrying! At least, you can stop worrying about HIV. The best way to prepare yourself for pregnancy and childbirth is to take prenatal classes; I encourage you to do this.
In your case, I would probably be more concerned with the possibility of Hepatitis C than HIV, both may not show any symptoms for 10 years or more if you take care of yourself, like not drinking heavily or using drugs. If you are worried, get tested, most likely your doctor will test you for HIV anyway because you are pregnant. If the piercing took place in a clean shop with a clean needle, the odds are you have contracted neither illness.
