Question:
Does anyone have bilia-atresia and have you ever had any problems with it. I've always had it and never had anything go wrong after the surgery when I was 11 months old. My Dr. seems surprised. Is this uncommon?
Answers:
It's biliary atresia. My guess is that you had the Kasai procedure. It is surprising that you haven't had problems. This procedure (hepatoportoenterostomy - see why we call it the Kasai?) isn't a curative. Approximately half of those with biliary atresia need a liver transplant in the first 2 years of life, another third sometime during childhood and the rest have some degree of liver disease. You are one of the very lucky few. Congratulations! I hope it stays this way.
