Have you ever had an allergic reaction to seafood or a medicine? I think shrimp made me sick.?

Question:
Last Monday I broke out in hives all over my body except my chest and back. I had hives front and back from the waist down, limbs, and along the sides of my shoulderblades down to my feet.

It started as hives and by the next day I had massive red patches.

The doctor gave me a Benadryl shot and some pills, which did nothing.

By night I went to the ER because I woke up with hives on my ears and my lips were swelling and I had tingling sensation to my limbs and hands.

I got another shot, this time it was a steroid, Prednisone, and another antihistamine pill and Benadryl pill.

It has been two days after the ER visit and my hives are gone but my skin has dark spots where the red patches were, and I still itch. How long before I recover from this crap?

Answers:
Food allergy
Do you "react" to certain foods?

Food allergies are nothing to sneeze at. The symptoms--nausea, itchy hives, breathing difficulty, and swelling--
are miserable. In extreme cases, allergies can be deadly.

Fortunately, only 1 to 2 percent of adults suffer from a true food allergy. So why, then, do as many as one in
three people believe they're allergic to certain foods?

The answer lies in the confusion between a food allergy and what is more likely a food intolerance.

Food allergy is an immune response

A food allergy is often hereditary. If one of your parents has an allergy, you're twice as likely to develop one.

Normally, your intestinal tract serves as a barrier between foods and your immune system. If you're prone
to a food allergy, this barrier fails. When an offending food (allergen) passes through your digestive system, your
body forms antibodies specific to the food. The next time you eat the food, it reacts with these
antibodies, triggering an allergic reaction that includes release of histamine and other chemicals.

Release of these substances can cause a host of uncomfortable symptoms affecting your skin, respiratory
system or stomach and intestines--usually within two hours.

However, it may be only seconds before someone with a severe allergy may experience an anaphylactic
(a-na-fi-LAK-tik) reaction. In this life-threatening condition, several parts of your body react simultaneously to the
allergen. The airways in your lungs constrict and the soft tissues in your throat swell, making it difficult to breathe.
Your heart beats rapidly. To prevent death, immediate medical attention is essential.

Any food can cause a food allergy. But few are actually proven to trigger reactions. The most common offenders
are peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish (especially shrimp), whitefish, wheat, milk and eggs.
yeah, after i ate shrimps,i got itchy sores on my face and legs
i ate some shrimp fried rice one time and i had diahreah really bad for like 2 days
You probably will be fine in another day or two. I recently (last weekend) had a very similar reaction but I have no idea what it was from. I had hives very very bad and the same red patches you explained. It took a couple days after the hives were gone to see the red clear up. Keep taking the Benadryl for the itching it should help especially at this point when it isn't as bad. I have had this happen off and on for years and still don't know what I am allergic to exactly even after allergy testing. Try not to scratch and hang in there it will be gone soon!
Have you eatten any more seafood? Or touched anything with iodine?
Becasue you could have a reaction to iodine. This is commonly used to help treat against infection, but iodine is also found in seafood.
Sounds like a bad case of shell fish allergy. Well, I'm sure you want eat shrimp anymore and beware of any shellfish from now on. If you can, go to the grocery store and get some chamomile tea. Brew tea bags to 2 cups of water, making it strong, then stand in bath tub and use it to sponge all over. This will killed off any residue left over bacteria and help the toxins move out of the skin cells quicker. Plus it relieves any itching or discomfort you are having. Keep chamomile in the house all the time for infections inside and outside, pink eye, allergies, ect. The brown spots are sometimes a common reaction the the steroid shots b/c it kills the bacteria dead in it's tracks and so the toxins are having difficulty releasing through the skin. The Chamomile will speed that process up for you. Best to you.
Each person is different. I have many allergies to medications, especially antibiotics.. making it difficult to treat me. and, shellfish, and pain meds.. try going to the dentist even with this...Jokingly one doctor said, "if i was a horse they'd shoot me". and, they don't know what to do anymore.. i just pray i don't get really bad sick.. Usually i find until the med/ prescription is out of my body, which isn't always a few hours but days to q week is what i go through to really feel back to normal.. it is pretty miserable.. so, i feel for you. going through the itchy's myself lately.. feels like pin pricks and stings and head to toe.. Even cosmetics and creams I've got to watch out for..
Our environment is so riddled with chemicals in this and that now days. the so called "Natural" ingredients and hype on organic.. still has me concerned.. Garlic i love, yet is a natural antibiotic, found that out when i ended up swelling after eating and landed in ER. by the way, read labels and ask before going out to eat, and in taking even so called good for you health products. one ingredient was labeled as another name never heard of , found out it was from shellfish.. nearly died!..
I have found by trial and error and experiences, too often i end up being the true researcher and detective of what is the culprit to my reaction.. I am diabetic too, so have to take a lot of things into consideration... Is it the diabetes ? other meds? food, contact item, have i used new laundry products, been around anything new, animal etc.. I found out i am very sensative to dust mites.. oh, joy.. i loved a dip at a party, asked later what made from not thinking .. and, found out crab.. yep, you guessed.. red spots, itchy and miserable..
so, i don't eat a thing now without first asking what is in it, the restaurant people if they seem upset , i tell them i have food allergies if they are reluctant, i leave...
good luck to you.. and, don't scratch.. i know hard, but, you just itch more!
