The KKK is alive and well, so why refer to them in the past tense?
The KKK is a hate group that commits hate crimes. I think this overshadows anything positive they have ever contributed.

The KKK still exists, although it isn't nearly as violent as it used to be. They have icky views, but it seems today's KKK is nothing but talk.
As for benefits...I wouldn't say they've brought us any benefits as a group, but I'm sure individual Klan members have done good things outside of the Klan. Not that this excuses the evil it has done.
Maybe the KKK originally was founded to do good things (I've got no idea about their history) but they became an organisation run by thugs with the goals of oppressing another groups of human beings.
Just like Hitler an the Nazis, you cannot found your own success and happiness on the sufferings of others.
It is not equitable, or just and eventually people despise you for it.
No matter how good your intentions are (and I doubt the KKK ever had any "good" intentions), it is not possible to be a good person (or organisation) and do bad things, knowing that you do them for your own benefit.
