What seems to be the best treatment for fibromyalgia? What is the medical opinion on tx with narcotics?

Question:
Someone I know takes hydrochodone and I would like to know if the benefits outweight the almost certain dependency.

Answers:
Since pain relievers are practically useless, and the prescriptions carry a lot of baggage like side effects, addiction, etc... I choose to eat the healthiest possible diet, take a few supplements to insure that my immune system and overall health is as good as it can get, and practice daily cognitive therapy (thought conditioning) to enhance my mood. If it weren't for the latter, I'd probably shoot myself.

Besides the pain, sleeplessness, balance issues, and myriad other symptoms, one of the worst things about fibro is trying to tell people about it. If they can't see it, they don't believe it's there. Even some moron doctors think its a mental issue. I can assure them that it most certainly is not. The cognitive therapy cured my nearly five year long depression... if it can do that (when doctors and their drugs could not), then fibromyalgia would be a piece of cake... if it were mental. It's not.

My sister has had fibro for over 10 years so I belong to an on-line group just to get any updates they may know about. They were talking about medical marijauana the other day. Seems it helps a lot. Most states it's illegal tho.
I take hydrocodone for my fibromyalgia. I've taken all the different strengths. I've found that nothing else works for me. I know some people can get relief from other things, but I've been hurting since I was 4 and I've tried everything that people have told me about. I've been on hydrocodone (along with other meds) for about 4 years now. I'm not addicted and I don't get "high" from it. I have had times when I couldn't get to the pharmacy or my dr. has been out of town and had to be off the hydrocodone for a week or so. I never had withdrawals or anything. I hurt pretty bad without it though. Sometimes you need relief and I don't think taking narotics is wrong if you have a good dr. that keeps an eye on you.
There is no BEST treatment. Every patient is different. Its really no body else's business how another person's illness is managed.

Those of us who have found some success can make suggestions on how other fibro patients may find relief also but we can not force them to try what has worked for us. Nor should we second guess their medical treatment plans. There is alot of negative energy in the world being directed at people who have chronic pain conditions who have to use medications to be able to have ANY quality of life. We shouldn't add to their problems by lobbying against their treatments. Its their lives, not ours.
I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia 11 years ago. I was put on Hydrocodone on an as needed basis, told to exercise and that there was no known treatment for FM. I am still being told the same thing today. Although Hydrocodone can be highly addictive, a lot depends on the person taking the medication and whether or not they have an addictive personality to begin with. That fact is usually left up to the Physician to discern, a good reason why many Dr.'s will not prescribe pain killers to new patients, they simply do not know enough about their background to know if they are going to abuse these medicines or not. I know for myself and many others the only relief we get is when we take our medication regularly as prescribed. I hope your friend does the same. For me it is worth taking narcotics to be able to get out of bed everyday and move about freely with less pain than if I had not taken a pill and just lay there and suffer all day and miss out on life. I hope I have helped you.
