How do you treat poison ivy?

Question:
How contagious is it? Can you spread it through using the same towel?

Answers:
If the poison ivy sap is already on the towel and someone else use it..(if it is not washed) yes.there will be an infection...as the poison won't go off without soaking and handwashing them.

Firstly, the infection is first done when you have direct contact with the plant. If you did use the gloves, please soak them in warm soap water - separate from any other laundry or kitchen towels and hand wash them. Usually the saps are quite saturated when you cover the gloves in more soapy warm water.

Use baking soda if you have them..they are cheap to buy..and I use them to soak the gardening tools..like scissors etc.

This is the 2nd time, I'm having the infection (2 months ago) from the poison ivy..and it still itches in the night...and I can't sleep. Now I'm using an ointment called 'Ivarest' which I bought from a local pharmacy here. It helps to keep the infected skin area dry and if it gets really bad, I had to take 'allergy' meds in the night..so that I won't scratch till I bleed in bed at night.

I do not take any chances..believe me..no one should get infected with poison ivy. Keep everything else separated from your gardening tools and wash them...everytime you come in contact with poison ivy.

Use long sleeves and gloves while getting rid of poison ivy.

I learnt it..the hard way..and I'm still learning it..'cos this poison ivy..just won't go away..in my backyard..and I'm still researching on how to destroy them..without killing my other plants.
have you tried logging into webmd? I believe it is pretty contagious, so I would wash everything that comes into contact with it. I also believe calamine lotion will help with the itching...
It depends of how sensitive the other people are.

But I know I am sensitive enough to get it from a towel.

If you go to a MD they will give you steroids and steroid cream to treat.

If you prefer a more natural approach you can go to a natural food store and they will give you products to treat.
Benadryl lotion
Once you wash well (with soap and water) it is no longer contagious. If it is a really bad case, you can get a shot from a doctor. If it is just annoying, don't scratch, and use lots of Calomine Lotion or Oatmeal Bath. There are different levels of people who are contagious. If I get it, I break out, but only where it touched me. Other people, if they get it, the whole body breaks out, which can be dangerous as it can spread to your throat. If you are the latter, go to the doctor. If your the first, put on some calomine lotion and oven mitts so you don't scratch. Taking warm baths help. Good luck.
With Caladryl Clear, a lotion. It is highly
contagious by contact and can be spread by using the
same towel.
Once you detect that you've contracted
poison ivy you are to remove any clothing
you are wearing and wash them immediately. This eliminates the risk of spreading this condition to others who share
your household-and of your contracting it again during your treatment stages.
Also, wash the towels you used after taking a bath or shower.
