Celiac Disease?

Question:
Do alot of people here have Celiac Disease? I thought we could start a nice discussion and help each other out. especially because some people (**Cough*** ***Cough *** ME ) are having trouble with a gluten free diet.. Does any one know good brands or websites... the only one i know are energy and celiacchicks.com.... I am not in a dreadful state, I was just wondering if anyone liked specific products I could try...( PS PAMELAS ROCKS)

Answers:
GIrl, don't get me started. I have answered my butt off on this forum trying to help ppl get diagnosed with CD, help those who have it, or suggest to some they may (or may not). I have also had to clear up rumors about the poisoned wheat gluten and to explain to some that the gluten free diet is NOT to lose weight on for ppl who dont need it!!

I TOTALLY hear u! When I was first diagnosed I had become pregnant after one month on the GF diet (after diagnosis by blood work) and when morning sickness hit, I chose crackers or puking!! I didnt know then about all the yummy GF food out there! SO I cheated A LOT in my first preg bc for some reason it didnt bother me. THen I was scared straight by the episode of House about Celiac (I dont care how plausible it was or not, it scared me straight!!) NO MORE CHEATING I knew! I wanted to be healthy and happy for my son. It is VERY hard at first but u should feel lucky bc we are in FAR better state than we were even 10 yrs ago! SOOO many good foods now.

Alrighty here is my typical referral list for newbies to the Celiac life (I run a CSA support group).

BOoks:
Celiac Disease a Hidden Epidemic by Dr Peter Greene
Living Wheat and Gluten Free for DUmmies, Danna Korn (Korn also has other great books focusingon kids)

Cookbooks:
ANy Bette Hagman GF Gourmet cookbooks!
Cooking without by Carol Fenster
Wheat Free and Gluten Free Cooking for Kids and BUsy Adults by Connie Sarros

Sites:
Recipes, info, support, products, etc:

www.csaceliacs.org
www.celiac.com
www.celiac.org
www.celiaccentral.org
www.glutenfree.com
www.amazon.com (great to shop for bulk in their grocery dept once u know u lik ea brand)
www.glutensolutions.com
www.glutenfreemall.com

Gluten Free Living is a great magazine too but expenseive. I get a subscription and share with my CSA group.
If u join the CSA (look under Local Support) u will get a newsletter adn can attend meetings to meet with other Celiacs and it REALLY helps u not feel alone and gives u great ideas.

Specific products I like:
(Note I do not bake from scratch, I am the world laziest cook yet I cook every nite!)

Baking, cookies, cake mixes: PAMELA"S Love her love her.
Flours: Bob's Red Mill
Crackers, cookies, pizzas, bread, etc: Glutino (awesome!!)
Bread, donuts, cinamon rolls, bagels, muffins, etc: Kinninnicks

The bad thing is shipping frozen stuff can be costly so try to find that stuff in your local area. Glutino bread comes room temp then u gotta freeze it so taht saves money.

I hope some of this helped and feel free to email me for more private help or chat!!
Amy
Edit:
Oh my fellow "Sillys" would smack me for not referring the SIllyYaks site, thank u for reminding me!! :)
About the only things I could add to Glutenfreegirls' answer are Glutino's website (below), and two suggestions.

Look at the food blogs on the net. Alot of the "ethnic" food blogs have recipes for great foods that are gluten free and that you've never tried before. That's a double bonus. first, they are safe to eat. Second, unlike gluten-free versions of the foods we grew up with which taste like card board, the ethnic foods have taste.

Second, there's a Yahoo! group called "Silly Yaks" that is meant for us to get together and help each other out.
There are a lot of celiac/gluten-free questions that pop up every week. I'll try to add some that are not covered already.

My Favorite Website (my website):
Celiac Handbook
http://www.celiachandbook.com
A great resource that covers just about every known GF resource. If you find anything that's missing there, feel free to add it.

My Favorite Gluten-Free Bakery
Everybody Eats in NYC (Amazing GF Baguette)
http://www.everybodyeats-inc.com/...

Whole Foods Gluten-Free Bakehouse
http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/products...

Some great products:
Glutino Frozen Pizza Crust
Glutino Breakfast Bars
Pamela's Lemon Cookies (Great for pie crusts)
Quinoa Flakes (good substitute for oatmeal)
And so many others...

Anyway, keep checking YouQA.com and you'll find some great gluten-free information every week. Good luck!
Kinnikinick (think i spelled that right) is a really good manufacturer of wheat free products in the northeast. My only gripe with them is a lot of it is rice based, but it tastes a lot better than most other wheat free bread. Call me crazy, but I also have tried spelt based products that if I eat in moderation, do not bother me. There's a company called berlin bakery, in ohio, that makes white spelt bread so delicious that it tastes even better than real wheat bread. Both of the companies I mentioned have websites and do mail orders. The spelt bread is a no-no for many celiacs, but I swear, it didn't do anything to me. BTW, is it possible to exhibit the symptoms of celiac disease but not have it. I was tested for it but didn't come up on the test. So my doctor said I may just have a very bad intolerance for it. Do you think I should get tested again?
