Can second hand marijuna smoke increase a childs heart rate?

Question:
I'm concerned because I have a neighbor that has a one year old child and I think the parents are smoking it around the child. This child has a increased heart rate and is in the hospital.

Answers:
The nicotine in conventional cigarette smoke does increase the heart rate. Although I don't advocate smoking marijuana period much less around children, it does not cause increased heart rate. The child with an increased heart rate is most likely being evaluated for sinus tachycardia (caused by fever, hyperthroidism, anemia) of supraventicular tachycardia (the most common abnormal tachycardia in the pediatric population.

Smoking marijuana around the kids doesn't cause health problems, but doesn't sound like responsible parenting!
