How to survive after an all nighter?

Question:
So I've been up all night with not even a minute of sleep. I have VERY severe insomnia. Well it's after 6:00 so I just figured I should stay up, how can I survive today without feeling like crap? What are some ways to keep myself awake at work?

Answers:
You have my empathy. I've had chronic insomnia too. I'm still not great in that area. To answer your question, drink a lot of water and step out into fresh air as often as possible. I wouldn't recommend exercise to stay awake, because in my personal experience, that only works on people who have slept at least SOME. You will likely just pass out.

That said, you cannot go on like this. It would be so very much more convenient if nature/God had designed the human body not to require sleep, but that is not how we were designed and you cannot maintain physical or mental health this way. There are any one of a number of things that can be at the root of this problem and you need to find out what it is (hormonal imbalance [more common in women], depression/anxiety, sleep apnea, a host of other things). Almost every major city has a sleep clinic. I'm guessing that since you have a job, you have insurance. Do something about this. Don't go on suffering. Wishing you good luck and good sleep.

Oh, in the interim, I've found that OTC sleeping pills with the active ingredient doxylamine succinate are very effective. You can get them generically in any pharmacy. Take them an hour or two before bed and go to bed early enough to get plenty of sleep (9 hours or so -- at least on me. It might be different for you).
