Answers:
Could be allergies. Or that he don't produce enough tears. Also I have heard that dehydration can do it also so if he has not been drinking allot of water latley that could also be it but its not a thing to be terrably worried about.
If it goes away fairly soon, it may just be allergies, but frankly, I wouldn't wait to go to the doctor. Eyesight is too important to risk. It could be conjunctivitis, too.
Does he wear contacts? Because wearing contacts decreases the moisture in your eyes and irritates it as well, if worn for a long period of time. There are also some cases where your eyes have difficulty producing "tears" or moisture. Eye drops will help. There are medicated eye drops as well if your eyes are red. However, before you go get medicated eye drops, you need to know exactly what is causing the redness. Seeing a doctor to prescribe something would be best.
I'd say dust or dust mites. When I wake in the morning, my eyes are red from the dust in my room.
