Question of Tetanus shots?
Question:
I need to get a TD shot for school - I am due. But my questions is, when I go to my doctor can I request it to be given in my bottom? Because last time I got one of the TD shots my arm was swollen for a week. I am not sure if they are even allowed to give it in your rear, and I know it would hurt alot less. So I guess my question is - Would the Nurse think I'm crazy for requesting that, and how should I go about asking?
Thanks
Answers:
No, tetanus injections are given in the arm due to where exactly in the muscle they have to go in. They have to be intramuscula rather than Injectable subcutaneous.
* An IM shot is given in your muscle, usually in your shoulder muscle.
* The doctor or nurse will give you this shot.
* You will probably have redness and swelling around the area where your shot is given. This is common and usually goes away after a couple of days.
* You will need to get a “booster” shot 4 to 8 weeks after your first shot, and again 6 to 12 months later.
* After your first set of shots, you should get one booster shot every 10 years.
Ask your doctor, it will still hurt either way, it is a side effect of the medication not the site you got it at unfortunately.
As long as it is given in the muscle, it doesn't matter which one... just tell them your experience from last time, and I;m sure they will understand and not have any problem with your request... they hear and do stuff like that all the time... good luck...
The tetanus shot is the most painful...
Just tell the nurse "the last time I got one it hurt my arm real bad, would it be better in my butt?"
it's ok if it got swollen that means the shot is working in your body...but as i remember they told me not to play with it or tuch it so be carefull...TIP (don't be shy to ask your doctor what comes in your mind even if you think it was silly but if it will make you feel better is you asked just do so)
