How to properly apply sunscreen?

Question:
For my weekend 1-2 hour hikes. How long before heading outdoors should I put it on? How much? Do I wanna see a white coating or or rub it in good?

I thought I put enough on the tops of my ears yesterday, but they're a little toasty today. :(

Answers:
put on a generous amount of sunscreen everywhere your skin will be exposed, about 30 minutes before you go outside, reapply every hour. and rub it in well, so your skin can absorb it.
