I believe they originate from the dead skin cells we shed on a daily basis. They accumulate in our pillows and mattresses. We all have hosts tiny, tiny microscopic hosts that feed off of our skin i.e "bed bugs".

I think they burrow into wood and come out when they sense a human. Nasty little things. The only sure way to get rid of them is to burn the whole bed.
