Answers:
There are treatments you get from your vet and put on the cat. Any flea biting the cat will die. You need to apply it once a month.
In the mean time, it sounds like your carpets are infested. I would bomb the house and vacuum daily, bombing again in 4 weeks when any missed flea eggs hatch.
To give your son relief give him an oatmeal bath and some benadryl (I know I am spelling this incorrectly, but you get the idea). That should relieve his itching. I would treat any open bites also to prevent infection.
Don't get rid of the cat. Fleas are easily preventable and having a pet has many advantages for your child.
Well, I'd get rid of the cat before I would allow my 2 yr old to suffer like that. But, if you won't do that, there is a spray for your carpet that will kill the fleas. You can get the cat a flea collar or better yet - go to a vet and get the flea medicine that you squirt on the back of your cat's neck.
Fleas must be exterminated first from your pet and your home as well - as fleas might have spread and laid eggs all around your house.
As for the bites, wash the affected areas with an antiseptic soap, apply ice pack over the area to reduce swelling and use creams with 1% hydrocortisone to relieve itching.
Check with your pediatrician if he can take antihistamines.
Seriously, get him a Flea Collar
Well if you know your son is allergic to flea bites, I would get rid of the cat and all animals.
Call an exterminator asap to get rid of the fleas that your house is infested with.
Now that you have a son with this allergy, it is up to you to protect him. Having any animal that has potential of carrying fleas is prohibited on your household.
Having such an animal will only harm your child !!
If I were you, the answer would have been obvious, the cat would have been history a long time ago.
