What could cause sudden joint pain and swelling?
Question:

This certainly isn't any kind of diagnosis, but this also happened to me last spring and it was lupus. Sudden onset of joint pain and swelling is a symptom of lupus. (SLE) You should go to the E.R. today. Blood work can be drawn which can help with the diagnosis as well as any necessary treatment. The physician there may start you on prednisone which is a steroid that will alleviate your pain and swelling rather quickly. Also, you can take an anti-inflammatory like Motrin every 6 hours which will help with the pain. Good Luck to you and I hope you are feeling well soon.
It could be Lyme Disease? You can have a blood test for that and it is treated with anti-biotics. For now you can just take some Aleve for the pain and swelling.
I would say its OK to wait until tomorrow to go see your Dr. but what worries me is the pain in your neck area. My husband had that kind of pain about a year ago, we took him to the emergency room, come to find out, he had spinal meningitis! I don't want to freak you out or anything, but because you are having pain at the base of your skull, i would suggest a trip to the E.R. If you were only hurting in your joints i would advise some tylonal and rest, but you may want to check in to see if there are any clinics in your area open on sundays or even go strait to the E.R.
Hope you feel better!!
