he also uses over the counter campo phenique or something like that

If you are trying to get rid of a cold sore, I would like to help.
Ice or anything cold, applied at any stage, will drive the herpes virus away from the area. This cold sore virus hates cold.
Applying garlic or onion oil (just cut open some fresh garlic or onion) will kick some serious virus butt - even when they are retreating.
You then put some fresh aloe vera gel on for quick mending of the wound. I have seen a wound heal closed in 24 hours using fresh gel from the plant leaf. It is amazing stuff.
