Answers:
Look into Diatamaceous Earth (DE). It is a natural earth product created from pulverized fossilized crustaceans. As a powder, it acts like billions of tiny, tiny little razorblades that slash the flesh of fleas and other pests, so that they dehydrate and die.

This IS NOT A POISON and is totally non-toxic and safe to pets and humans. Because it is not a poison, there is no way for fleas to build up an immunity, so it can be used as frequently and for as long as needed.

Some exterminators can put this stuff down for you, but you can do it yourself. You will want to take precautions when spreading it to be sure that children and pets are not around, and to be sure and protect your eyes and do not inhale the powder, because it can be irritating to the nose and eyes until the dust settles. You probably should wear a long-sleeved shirt and maybe even gloves for the same reason.

It's a good idea to shampoo your carpet BEFORE spreading this stuff, because it settles into the nap of the carpet and is effective for 6 months to a years, but ONLY if you don't shampoo the carpet once it is down.

You can also spread DE outside. You can safely use it on hardwood floors and floor tiles. Use it in the attic and if you have a basement, use it there too. It does kill spiders and roaches.

You should be able to find DE at any Feed Store. It's been awhile since I priced it. At that time it cost between 85 cents to $1.15 per pound. At some feedstores, you will only be able to purchase it in 3-5 pound pkgs; at others, you can buy it from bulk and purchase anything from a few ounces to as many pounds as you can carry. This is an extremely fine powder, so a little goes a long way.
Your mom should call an exterminator if the problem is as bad as you say. The flea bites will not kill you, but keep some antibiotic cream on them so they will not get infected.
Use Borax..let it sit over night..vacuum..then pour it again and you should be good.
I moved into a flea-infested rental a few years back. I tried everything - bombs, sprays, bathing the animals, flea collars, etc. - nothing worked. Finally I spread diatomaceous earth all around the house...it works wonders on fleas. You can get it from garden supply stores. Just take care to read the label, there are some precautions.
We had fleas in our house after taking a long vacation trip...our friend had taken our cats out and the fleas had taken over the house. They were in everything. Here's what we did:

sprinkle flea powder over the carpet and let it sit for a few minutes. Put old fashioned moth balls in an empty vacuum cleaner bag and put it on the vacuum.

Then go nuts with the vacuum. when you are done throw the bag into a plastic bag and remove it from the house. Put more moth balls in a new vacuum cleaner bag and continue to dust and vacuum every day. Don't forget to change the bag. The moth balls will kill any fleas that are alive in the vacume. Doesn't smell the greatest, but it works. They will be gone in a few days. Cut up a couple of flea collars and put the pieces in between the cushions of the couch and chairs to keep the fleas out.
I totally had this problem due to my very hairy dog. We tried everything. We bought the expensive flea sprays and bombs and everything other then call an exterminator. I called one and they don't even guarantee there work and it costs a lot of $.
My man went to the store and asked some guy that worked there. It is the Raid flea killer its like 5.00 a can. I swear by the stuff. Try it and you will see a difference. You might have to spray every couple of days for a week or 2 depending on the infestation and the eggs that have hatched.
