Is a cold sore Herpes?

Question:
Just because you get one cold sore doesn't mean you have Herpes?
Im really confused.
I got one cold sore and my friend told me that I have herpes?
So if someone asks me if I have herpes what should I say?
its just a cold sore..
I dont have herpes, i got tested.
But just because you have a cold sore, does that mean you HAVE herpes?

Answers:
A cold Sore is indeed Herpes. It can be either HSV1 or HSV2. Just because it is located on your mouth does not automatically make it HSV1 (Oral). You can contract HSV2 (genital) from performing oral sex on a person with HSV2 and spread it to your mouth area. There does NOT need to be an open sore present for the virus to spread. A process know s Assymptomatic Shedding can spread the virus thru slufted skin cells that carry the virus. The only test that can determine if your is herpes effectively is the blood test. You MUST asked specifically for the Herpes test from your doctor. The basic testing done at your annual exam with the OB/GYN does not check for herpes. If you were recently exposed the test may come back with a false negative response due to the fact that your body has not had enough time to produce enough antibodies to appear in the blood work. I recommend that you return to the doctor for a requested blood test for herpes. They can even type your strain (Hsv 1 or Hsv2) if you would like.
A cold sore is a type of viral herpes, yes. It does not mean you have genital herpes.
YES IT IS HERPS BUTT A DIFFERENT STRAIN AND WHEN IT GOES AWAY SO DOES THE HERPS
Cold sores are a type of the Herpes virus, as is Shingles.
You are probably thinking of the sexually transmitted variant which affects genitals.
If you have a coldsore and you performed oral sex, then yes you can transmit the virus and give someone genital herpes.
There are different forms of herpes, and yes, a cold sore is one of them. Chicken pox is another. I don't know who you got tested by, but you should get a second opinion as soon as possible, sounds like this one doesn't quite know what he/she is talking about. Sorry.
When you are tested negative for herpes test dont bother about it

YES It is a form of Herpes.
there are some virus's that can contribute to cold sores but as to specific origins it's being debated
Yes, cold sores are caused by the hsv1 virus although some are caused by hsv2 - herpes simplex virus. Because you have it orally you are not counted as having an std but you are just as at risk of giving your partner genital herpes if you give them oral sex. I caught genital herpes hsv1 from recieving oral sex and up to 2/3 of new genital herpes cases among young people are caught this way.

But, about 60% of younger people and 95% of people by age 50 have oral herpes (cold sores) so you are not alone. It is not normally caught through sex but by being kissed by a friend or relative as a child. Those people who already have it like you are extremely unlikely to catch it from you, orally or genitally, but people who have never had a cold sore are at risk for both, even when you do not have a visible cold sore. My boyfriend never gave me oral sex when he had a sore but I still caught it when he didn't have one.

It is still considered common to have cold sores and it does not have the stigma that having the same virus genitally has, but if you are ever going to give oral sex to someone it might be nice to inform them you get cold sores nad so could potentially give them herpes. I really wish more people did that.
Yes, a cold sore is herpes, but that doesn't mean it's the STD herpes. There are two types. Time for you to do some research and reading!
