What is a safe yet effective intestine/colon cleanse detox that I can do at home?

Question:
I have been having some skin problems over the last year, after I quit smoking and drinking. I have read that I most likely have plaque and toxins built up in intestine/colon. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Answers:
Sounds like a bunch of new age nonsense. Go see a dermatologist and ask him/her for their opinion. Your colon is not supposed to be devoid of toxins btw. If you cleanse all the bacteria and what not, you will find it difficult to break down any number of foods and are asking for trouble.
The plaque/toxin theory is nonsense. Plaque can't build up in the intestine because the cells in the lining are replaced on average every 3 days or so. Toxins don't accumulate because they are cleared by defecating or absorption (and subsequent inactivation by the liver and excretion in bile or urine).

However, the intestine/colon may affect your skin condition indirectly. For example, malabsorption of certain fats and vitamins can cause a variety of dermatologic problems. Or, your condition could be autoinflammatory, or an infection. A dermatologist is the only one who is qualified to make the call.

So find a dermatologist and get a firm diagnosis first. Only then will you know what treatment approach will work. It may seem expensive to see a doctor, but in the long run it will save a lot of wear and tear on your body and your pocketbook to select the proper treatment the first time.

If the doctor assesses your skin condition to be based in nutrition, then see a registered dietitian (RD) for counseling about what to eat to cure the problem.
