Question:
I had a CAT scan done and they found a nodule on my thyroid. I have to get a 24 hour thyroid scan done and I was wondering if anyone has had one or knows what it entails.
Answers:
Radioactive iodine is injected into your vein and you have to wait 24h hours for appropriate circulation of the radioactive iodine. Thyroid nodules can either be hot or cold, they can either be iodine uptaking or not. If it is a hot nodule, the radioactive iodine will accumulate at the nodule and the thyroid scan picks itup as a red glow in the nodule. The thyroid scan is useful since the treatment for a hot and cold nodules are different.
