Go to the website for the Social Security Administration - http://www.ssa.gov and on the home page you'll see a link for Benefits information (lower right hand). Go to it, click on it and you'll see an option for the Benefit Eligibility Screening Tool (BEST). See first if your son is eligible and how to go about applying if he is. It's recommended that benefits be applied for the first day of disability. If your son is a minor who hasn't worked, he may not be eligible but you may be.
Under COBRA, you should be able to continue your current insurance for six months, although you'll have to pay the portion that your employer previously contributed.

That should give you enough time to get your son on Medicare -- which covers kidney transplant patients of any age. You should also apply to get him on Medicaid, which has better drug coverage.

In both cases, stress your son's medical disability. You want to qualify him based on that, rather than your income. Then he'll keep it, regardless of your future employment or insurance status.
I work for a small Texas city and handle all the insurance. Your ex employer has to offer you cobra. It is expensive you will have to pay the rate your employer pays for insurance and add your son. Most place mark it up 2% also. Your best bet is to try Medicaid or social security.
