I get sharp pains in my back at my lung bases (where I imagine them to be)?

Question:
Laterally when I take a deeper breath than usual like yawn, It takes my breath away, I have to breathe very shallow to not get that sharp pain. So sharp you have to immediately stop breathing and then breathe shallow. I have had this problem off and on for years, no one can explain it to me ( no dr. or er) chest x ray is normal. I get one every year because I am an ex smoker. No other symptoms. It just started tonight. when I was yawning.

Answers:
What you are having is pluerisy. This is an infection of the lining of the lung (pleura). Commonly it is caused by virus. It is a self limiting disease. If it lasts for more than a week you need attention. Till then take pain killers.
