Belly Button Piercing...?

Question:
I'v wanted to get my belly button pierced until my mom told me about one of who friends who got hers done and got "mersa" and i don't exactly know what that is but is it dangerous?

Answers:
What is it?
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterium that causes infections in different parts of the body. It's tougher to treat than most strains of staphylococcus aureus -- or staph -- because it's immune to some commonly used antibiotics.

The symptoms of MRSA depend on where you're infected. Most often, it causes mild infections on the skin, causing pimples or boils. But it can also cause more serious skin infections or infect surgical wounds, the bloodstream, the lungs, or the urinary tract.

Though most MRSA infections aren't serious, some can be life-threatening. Many public health experts are alarmed by the spread of tough strains of MRSA. Because it's hard to treat, MRSA is sometimes called a "super bug."

What causes it?
Garden-variety staph are common bacteria that can live on our bodies. Plenty of healthy people carry staph without being infected by it. In fact, 25-30% of us have staph bacteria in our noses.

But staph can be a problem if it manages to get into the body, often through a cut. Once there, it can cause an infection. Staph is one of the most common causes of skin infections in the U.S. Usually, these are minor and don't need special treatment. Less often, staph can cause serious problems like infected wounds or pneumonia.

It's a staph infection from using dirty tools. Check with your local health department for a reputable piercing salon. They all have to hold licenses and it's public record if anyone has ever had a complaint.

I have had my belly button done twice (first one had to be taken out when I was pregnant) and both times it was fine.
make sure you use a decent peircing place, that you know people have used and have had no problems. i had my belly button pierced when i was 13 n im nearly 20 now and ive had no problems. good luck
well...it sounds something like a staph infection of sorts. here:

yeah. the whole link. or go to www.webmd.com and type "mersa" in to the search.

HOWEVER. belly button piercing is probably THE most common of the body piercings and, while they-like any piercing-can get infected and go wrong. IF it's done in a clean and very sterile environment with sterile needle/equipment etc (legit piercing parlors where they SHOW you the stuff as it's coming out of the package kinda thing) AND you stick to their care instructions WITHOUT FAIL.as well as start pretending that there's a bubble that says neither you nor anything else can touch your bellybutton for 9 months MINIMUM.than you should be just fine. i mean it. DONT PLAY WITH IT.

honestly, your mom may have been telling the truth about her friend...but the friend probably didnt care for her piercing very well and furthermore she's more than likely trying to scare the idea out of you.
From what I read, it is definitely dangerous. You have to make sure you clean the piercing very well and often. I had a piercing in my belly button a few years ago, and I noticed that it was always trying to get infected during the healing time, so I kept it very clean. This is what I found on the web: It's actually spelled MRSA, and it's an infection that is resistant to antibiotics - It hasn't been around very long, because it's a new type of Staph infection. Here's what the web said:
What is MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)?
Some staph bacteria have mutated and cannot be killed with commonly used antibiotics. MRSA is a type of staph that is resistant to antibiotics including methicillin and other more common antibiotics such as penicillin and amoxicillin. Millions of people are colonized with MRSA in the U.S. alone and infections are appearing at epidemic rates. MRSA infections are commonly mistaken as spider bites.
