What foods are good or bad for an under-active thyroid gland?

Question:
Hi, i suffer from hypthyroidism. I take thyroxine daily and my annual blood tests confirm that i'm on the correct dosage. However i have been reading conflicting reports on what foods i should or should not take. Some say peanuts are good for you, others say to avoid at all costs. Likewise broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage as they are all goitrogens. Can anyone offer any advice? And should I be taking Kelp? Again there seems to be various differences of opinion on this. Thanks

Answers:
Generally there are no dietary restrictions on people with thyroid disease on treatment.
I would just stick to a healthy balanced diet. If you take note of the government 5-a-day program as well, then you should be fine.

I should stay away from Kelp, it will make your problems worse. It will contain too much iodine and pose all kinds of health risks, including worsening your hypothyroidism.

The jury is likely to be out over goitrogens for a long time, but it seems to me that as long as you don't make any drastic changes to your diet, then your medication will be adequate to cope.
try this site http://www.thyroiduk.org/

I was diagnosed with an under-active thyroid 5 years ago and the advise the nurse gave me was as long as I was on the correct dosage of thyroxine and had a healthy balanced diet there was no need to worry about what I should and shouldn't be eating, everything in moderation, though she did say it was best to cook the veg you have listed.
I have it too, and Dr. said to stay away from kelp and not to eat a lot of soy! There is so much contradictory information about that. There is a great website to visit. It is www.aboutthyroid.com. You will find a lot of information there. Feel good!
Are you so sure they are at the right level? Just being in range is not enough, especially when labs like Quest are using outdated ranges. Are you always testing TSH in the morning? If not, you could be undermedicated. The morning TSH should be around 1.0. Are you getting a free t3 test? If not, you could have low t3 levels and aren't converting T4 into T3. These are all things I would look into first.

I stay away from most of the goitens, especially soy. I also do not use fluoride.

About kelp.do you know if you are iodine deficient? Ypu'd want to know this beforehand because taking it and you don't need it could make you hyper. I'd look into getting the thyroid levels right first. I have a feeling yours aren't there yet. on T4 the TSH should be about 1.0 and if you are on Armour the TSH is worthless. With Amour the free t4 should be midrange and the free t3 high in range.

My husband has this problem, the advise he's been given is to have a healthy balanced diet. He's also keen on the coconut oil diet check out the site www.coconutdiet.com/thyroid_he...
Hope this is of some help.
