Can you really get rid of dust mites?
Question:
Answers:
yes you can temporarily get rid of dust mites(permanently if kept on top of) my wife was watching an episode of HOW CLEAN IS YOUR HOUSE and this family's house was minging and they didn't know why their asthmatic son was keep on having bad attacks until tests were done in different parts of the boy's bedroom and there were millions of dust mites all over., so they ripped up the carpet, took out all the soft toys and furnishings, hired an industrial steam cleaner and blitzed the whole room including his mattress. they then laid laminate flooring. when tested again they only found a couple of hundred in his mattress so they blitzed it again and got the last remaining ones.
they are always going to be there, they are an important part of our ecological system.
You can reduce the population only, insecticides used to do this although relatively safe, are probably much more harmful than the mite however! Hoovering the place with a fine filter vacuum, including all bedding helps, and spraying the bedding with liquid nitrogen kills the bug without leaving toxic residues behind, but they quickly re-establish themselves anyway. They are after all commensals, only feeding on our skin scales anyway, perhaps it is better to consider them as one of the creatures that mostly lives in harmony with us.
my little girl has a major allergy to dust and dustmites (she gets a shot every week).
i keep the house as clean as possible. we have carpet (apartment, no choice) but no curtains. everything gets washed in hot water (comforters, pillows, stuffed animals, etc) or put in the deep freezer. we use a dehumidifier (drier climates create a difficult breeding ground dustmites). all you can do is alter the environment that you live in.
You can't completely eradicate dust mites, but you can reduce the amount of them. I have an allergy to them and steam my carpets and bedding once a month. It also helps to leave your bed unmade as it cools the bedding and the dust mites don't thrive in such conditions. I also use anti-allergy bedding covers and change and wash (on a really hot wash) sheets and all bedding. When dusting I damp dust by using damp dusters (don't use sprays) and I have mainly wooden or lino floors which I sweep every day to keep clear of dust.
