If you have had a splenectomy dose that mean you have a weak immune system ?

I've had problems with my spleen and may end up having it out one day. The drs told me it's no big deal - you can do without it. It IS true that your spleen is part of your immune system, though, so it's possible that you could be more likely to get viruses. My dr said they'll ususally give you flu shots to give you extra protection during virus season, but it sounds like you're doing OK without! If I were you I'd talk to a dr about it just to ease your mind.
All patients undergoing splenectomy should be vaccinated against pneumococcal pneumonia. Consult your physician regarding an appropriate vaccination regimen. In addition, some physicians recommend vaccinations against other types of bacteria, and, especially in the case of children, long-term treatment with antibiotic drugs to prevent post-splenectomy sepsis. Long-term antibiotic use is usually not necessary in adults.
However, any patients who have had a splenectomy should seek medical attention for even seemingly minor illnesses, such as sinus infections or sore throats, as the health care provider may wish to prescribe antibiotics.
Its been 10 years I would think you will be fine. Visit your Doctor for any cold flu of infection. Your odds of dieing from this would be about 500000000 to 1. You have much greater chance of passing away in another car accident . YOUR COUSIN IS NUTS-- But be glad shes there it sounds like she really cares you.
GOOD LUCK AND WEAR YOUR BELT.LOL
The spleen is what makes white blood cells which do fight off infection. Your immune system is weaker than someone who does have a spleen, but it doesnt mean you are going to get a disease and your body not be able to fight it off.
I know people that have lived full and productive lives without spleens.
Therefore dont worry. If you get very sick by all means go to your doctor and get antibiotics.
